If you don´t have an internet-related job, you probably don’t have a clue of what a parallel universe the web has become, with its own laws of physics and surely terms like SEO, SERP or Rank Tracker may seem like absurd and unnecessary to you. However, the truth is it’s a completely unknown territory for most people –whether they realize it or not– and for those non-initiated in SEO, it may seem like a star wars’ story, I mean, something it takes place “in a galaxy far, far away”.
With that in mind, here are an SEO terms guide for beginners to help you to get awareness of the laws of physics set in motion every time you click “search” in your browser.
1. Search Engine (SE)
Today, the first thing we do to find anything on the internet (news, music, etc.) it´s to turn to the so-called search engines like “google”, “bing” or “yahoo”, three of the most popular and powerful search engines so far, which provides an indexed and ranked list of results “considered” relevant. This relevance comes from an intricate process involving databases and keywords or characters defined in “the search”.
2. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Even though, SEO it’s considered to be a very complex marketing discipline we can summarize it as making sure your site it’s on the same page –sort of speak– of the search engine and vice versa. I know, I know… it’s not easy to digest, but you´ll come around to it later.
3. Search Engine Result Page (SERP)
The search engine result page or “SERP”, for example, appears on “google” every time we do a search. Nevertheless, those results don´t get there randomly, that´s the outcome of SEO, and of course it depends on what would you like to accomplish with your site (depending on the structure of your site and keywords) or what kind of page are you hosting (e-commerce, videos, maps, etc.). This leads us to the next topic on our list, the rank tracker.
4. Rank Tracker
It´s a tool used by SEO to know if what they are doing it´s working. Experts to identify trends in search engines and social media can use the results to influence what you read, eat and buy. Likewise, you can keep track on how many people visit your site around a keyword, allowing you to project trends amongst different types of users on the internet.
As you may have read, it’s not as simple as it may seem, neither as difficult as most people think, but these shallow approach to it, may help you to get on your way to get the big picture on the subject, and why not? Move your rudder to a new entrepreneurship.
